| The
facts
That allowing any type of insect or rodent within your premises
or home will obviously be a nuisance and in some cases serious
illness, loss of business and in extreme circumstances,
legal and civil prosecution. Enthusiastically social insects,
ants typically live in structured nest communities that
may be located underground, in ground-level mounds, or in
trees. Carpenter ants nest in wood and can be destructive
to buildings. Some species, such as army ants, defy the
norm and do not have permanent homes. Ant communities are
headed by a queen or queens, whose function in life is to
lay thousands of eggs that will ensure the survival of the
colony. Workers (the ants typically seen by humans) are
wingless females that never reproduce, but instead forage
for food, care for the queen's offspring, work on the nest,
protect the community, and perform many other duties. Male
ants often have only one role—mating with the queen.
After they have performed this function, they may die. Ants
communicate and cooperate by using chemicals that can alert
others to danger or lead them to a promising food source.
They typically eat nectar, seeds, fungus, or insects. However,
some species have diets that are more unusual.
Where do Ants live?
Garden ants are found throughout Britain and usually nest
in gardens and areas around buildings. They often enter
homes in search of food. Garden/Black ants are not regarded
as a 'significant risk to public health' however they can
be a nuisance when found in the home. They can find the
smallest of cracks in builidings, and if they locate a source
of food within the building they communicate this to other
ants and then lead them into the building to feed. During
the summer, the flying stages of the ants may be seen emerging
from the nest in large numbers. This event normally lasts
for only a few days.
Why keep Ants under control?
While most ants are just considered a nuisance, once they
find food they will return to the nest to communicate the
location to other ants. This will lead to more and more
insects invading your home. Ants are a nuisance and it can
be quite upsetting to find ants in your food or on surfaces
where food is prepared. Just remember, ants are hardy creatures
and removing them can prove to be difficult.
Prevention & Control
Remove food and water sources. Place all household rubbish
in bins with tight fitting lids, clear up fallen fruits
from the garden, avoid putting food scraps on compost heaps,
use rat proof bird tables, keep outside pet houses clean
and remove any excess food left by them. Keep gardens clear
of overgrown areas and avoid accumulations of rubbish, wood
and rubble, etc. Check buildings for access holes and fix
any broken airbricks, gaps round pipes, broken windows,
etc. There are many types of ant control treatments: natural
ant control, ant control home remedy, ant control boric
acid, outdoor ant control, ant control products, organic
ant control, ant control borax, and ant bait. Selecting
the treatment that is right for you may be a bit tricky.
Its usually recommenced that bad infestations be left to
the professionals. Once you have the bugs under control
it is best to keep them under control. Regular service is
a must when combating the neighbourhood bug problem. Skipping
service is unwise. Ants can lay down paths using pheromones
that last up to a year! These superhighways will lead new
invaders right back into your home. Get a professional exterminator
